How to Overcome Boredom when Exercising

Original content by The Fitness Doc | Posted Aug 10, 2011 in Physical Fitness Advice

Although it is quite often a solitary activity, time spent exercising or in the gym need not be boring. In fact, many people report that their time in the gym is their most blissful, particularly since they can totally tune out the many distractions in their daily lives.

At the same time, it is important to avoid boredom settling in when you are exercising. The more bored you are whenever you go to the gym, the more likely you are to eventually stop. Following a few simple steps will keep your exercise sessions interesting though.

Keep it short

The longer you spend in one activity, the more likely it is that you will eventually get bored. By having several short exercise sessions during the week, instead of one big one on the week, you reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Overcome boredom while exercising

Add variety

It is not necessary to spend an hour at the gym using just one machine, or running on the treadmill. If your visit to the gym lasts just an hour, you can easily exercise 4 different body areas, by spending just 15 minutes on each machine, or exercise type.

Get a training partner

Many people will exercise or go to the gym with a training partner. Besides spurring each other to achieve your training goals, having a partner you can talk to will go a long way to alleviating any boredom that might be setting in.

Visit any gym today, and you will see many people listening to music through their headphones. Most enjoy at least one type of music, and loading up your music player with your current favourites should keep your exercise interesting, and help the time pass much quicker.

Other audio

We live in an increasingly digital age, and there are many different audio products now available on the market. Many people use their time in the gym to listen to audio books, podcasts, and sometimes even language learning courses. The amount of audio that is available for download--in many cases free--means that there is something for everyone.

Try new things

It is possible for boredom to creep in if you go to the gym, and work on the same machines, doing the same exercises, week in week out. While you might have personal favourites, you can add a bit of variety to your exercise plans by trying a new machine every week. Similarly, the bigger gyms will offer more than one class, and many gyms let their members try out a single class for free. Trying something new once in a while will not only keep you from getting bored, but might also introduce you to exercise activities you might not have considered otherwise.
